Artist Kim Sang-hee Looking for Beauty through Dramatic Simplification

Kim Sang-Hee boldly simplifies buildings, stones, and books. She boldly simplifies things that are common in our everyday lives. She omits the peripheries and leaves just the most important forms. Although she uses many western style materials like acrylic paintings and oil paintings. She also enacts the oriental painting philosophy which values the work of leaving certain things out. Kim Sang-hee said, “The act of simplifying and drawing an object itself is a process of studying the object,” adding, “If you draw a line and color according to the shape, you think deeply about the function of the object.” She said, “There is a lot of space in the work because the object is simplified. She said, “I have made constant efforts to create this margin,” adding, “Usually, I complete the work by filling in the margin, but I have done the opposite.”
Kim Sang-Hee does these things because she believes in the saying ‘the more simple something is, the more beautiful it is.’ She said, “I realized from my work at the time that the simpler the object is, the more beautiful the object is,” adding, “The essence of the object is revealed through simplification, and the beauty of the essence is also revealed.” She said, “To the audience, ‘The world is simpler than you think. “So I want to say that it’s beautiful,”. The simplification work is also in line with her understanding of the world. Artist Kim usually simplifies and understands complex things. It’s a habit for her to be surprised when she finds out that no one else does.
The objects that the artist draws are very diverse. The objects range some large tunnels and large buildings to much smaller objects such as books and bookshelves. So far seven pieces of her artwork has been presented; this includes books, a bookcase, underground tunnels, an individual brick, and several sidewalk bricks.Along with the painting, it presents an object that became a model for the painting’s instillation work. In august of 2023, a special exhibition was held at the Eulhiri Art Exhibit and Hanzom Art Museum, which showcased the simplified lighting and the lighting that became the model of the work. For bookshelf and canvas waxwork, they have also been working on displaying simplified works and objects that have become models of the works.
The artist’s work has a stable and sophisticated color combination. She said, “It makes nothing in the work stand out and harmonize with the whole,” and added, “It doesn’t have to be too short of the presence of the work, but I don’t like it to stand out too much compared to the surroundings.”
김상희 작가는 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 빌딩, 돌, 책 등을 과감하게 단순화해 그린다. 주변적인 걸 생략하고 가장 핵심적인 형태만 남긴다. 아크릴물감 또는 유화물감이라는 서양화의 재료를 사용하지만, ‘생략’하는 작업이라는 점에서 여백을 중요하게 여기는 동양화의 철학과도 맞닿아 있다. 김상희 작가는 “어떤 대상을 단순화해 그리는 행위 자체가 그 대상을 연구하는 과정”이라며 “형태에 맞춰 선을 긋고 색을 칠하다 보면 그 사물의 기능에 대해서도 깊이 사유하게 된다”고 말했다. 그는 “대상을 단순화해 그리다 보니 작품에 여백이 많다. 이 여백을 만들기 위해 지금까지 부단한 노력을 해왔다”며 “보통은 여백을 채움으로써 작품을 완성하지만 나는 그 반대로 해 온 것”이라고 했다.
김상희 작가가 이처럼 사물을 단순화하는 건 ‘단순한 게 가장 아름답다’는 생각 때문이다.
작가는 “단순화할수록 그 대상이 아름다워진다는 걸 당시 작업으로 깨달았다”며 “단순화를 통해 그 대상의 본질이 드러나고, 그러면서 본질이 가진 아름다움도 함께 드러나는 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 “관람객에게 ‘세상은 생각보다 단순하다. 그래서 아름답다’는 얘기를 하고 싶다”고 했다. 단순화 작업은 그가 세상을 이해하는 시각과도 맞닿아 있다. 작가는 평소 복잡한 걸 봤을 때 이를 단순화해 이해한다. 다른 사람은 그렇게 하지 않는다는 걸 알았을 때 놀랐을 정도로 이는 그에게 습관이다.
작가가 그리는 대상은 다양하다. 터널, 건물 등 큰 구조물부터 책, 책장 등 비교적 작은 사물까지 두루 그린다. 지금까지 책장을 단순화해 그린 Bookcase, 터널을 그린 Underground, 보도블록을 그린 Brick 등 모두 일곱 종류의 작품 시리즈를 선보였다. 그림과 함께 그 그림의 모델이 된 사물을 설치작품으로 선보이는 작업도 한다. 지난해 8월에는 기획 전시관 ‘을지로예술공장&한뼘미술관’에서 조명을 단순화한 작품과 그 작품의 모델이 된 조명을 함께 선보이는 개인전 ‘Follow the Light’를 했다. 책장, 캔버스 왁구 등에 대해서도 이를 단순화한 작품과, 작품의 모델이 된 사물을 함께 전시하는 작업을 해왔다.
작가의 작품은 색 조합이 안정적이고 세련된 느낌을 준다. 그는 “작품 속 어떤 것도 튀지 않고 전체와 조화를 이루도록 한다”며 “작품의 존재감이 너무 없어서도 안 되지만, 그렇다고 주변 환경에 비해 너무 튀는 것도 좋아하지 않는다”고 말했다.
